In a considered collaboration with New York-based Japanese artist Tomokazu Matsuyama, known simply as MATZU to his friends, the denim label Evisu has produced the MATZU For Evisu Jeans Limited Edition Box Set. An acknowledgement of Evisu’s 20th anniversary, that passed last year, the limited edition jeans celebrate “20 Years of Making Rules ; 20 Years of Premium Denim“.
The slim 2010 fit, unwashed selvage denim features a repetitive allover print which draws on vibrant yellow polka-dots and tonal eardrop shaped paisley. Each pair comes in a traditional Japanese packaging, an elaborate gift wrapping process with furoshiki cloth in various shades of blue along with a wooden box etched with Matsuyama’s famous motif of a Kirin. Said to be a Chimera-like creature that was half-dragon and half-giraffe, the Kirin played an auspicious part in Asian mythology and an important role in Japanese culture. Accompany the MATZU jeans is a special Japanese fan printed with Matsuyama’s elaborated Kirin graphic on the front, a detailed timeline of Evisu’s 20 years on the back.
