First Taiwan Academy Film Series

Taiwan’s New Wave Cinema Film Series Opening Reception:  Celebrating the Beginning of the First Taiwan Academy Film Series

On October 21st, the New York branch of the newly established Taiwan Academy and the Press Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO-NY) under Director Brian Su will be hosting a reception and inaugural screening celebrating a new film series titled Taiwan’s New Wave Cinema. The reception will begin at the lobby of TECO-NY (1 East 42nd St.) and will be followed by a screening of Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s The Boy’s from Fengkuei. After the screening, La Frances Hui, Assistant Director, Cultural Programs & Film Curator of Asia Society, will field a Q&A session about the film and Taiwanese New Wave Cinema.

The New York branch of the international Taiwan Academy is one of three offices slated to be established in the United States and will officially open its doors on the fifth floor of the TECO-NY building on October 14th.  The academy’s mission is to promote cross-cultural interchange by providing opportunities for people to learn about Taiwanese culture and Mandarin Chinese language and characters. In addition to cultural and language programs on site, important components of the Taiwan Academy will be online, making it easy for individuals to gain access to innovative language learning tools and information about Taiwan.

As part of its cultural programming, the Taiwan Academy will host film series which will expose local audiences to Taiwanese cinema and documentaries about Taiwan. Taiwan’s New Wave Cinema is the first of these series and will feature four of the internationally renowned realist films of the late 1980’s: The Boys from Fengkuei by Hou Hsiao-Hsien; That Day on the Beach by Edward yang; Dull-Ice Flower by Yang Li-Guo; and Ah Fei (You Ma Cai Zi) by Wan Jen.
