'Chinglish' Wins Two Jeffs

Source from Variety.com

CHINGLISH is the hilarious new comedy by Tony winner David Henry Hwang on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre.

Current Broadway offering “Chinglish” picked up a couple of Equity Jeff Awards for the play’s Chicago bow earlier this year, but it was local revivals of “Candide” and “The Madness of George III” that dominated Windy City legit laurels.

“Chinglish,” the David Henry Hwang play produced in Chi by the Goodman Theater, shared the kudo for new work (play) with Northlight Theater’s “The Outgoing Tide.” “Chinglish” also took home a set design trophy for David Korins, who designed the Broadway set as well.

But the award for top large-scale play production went to Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s “Madness,” which nabbed a total of five kudos. The Mary Zimmerman-helmed revival of musical “Candide,” co-produced by Goodman and Shakespeare Theater Company, also scored five, included top large-scale tuner production.

Other winners to emerge from the awards ceremony, held Nov. 7, included Second City’s “Sky’s the Limit (Weather Permitting)” and Chicago Shakespeare’s “Murder for Two — A Killer Musical,” which shared the prize for new work (musical), as well as the American Theater Company’s “The Original Grease,” taking the trophy for midsize musical production.
