YOUTH ORCHESTRA, CYCNY will present its 14th Annual Christmas Concert, which is admission free and open to the general public, no ticket required. The 70 young musicians will perform orchestral works led by Chris Chi-Jen Chung, conductor and string instructor.
The Youth Orchestra is a Queens-based Youth Orchestra since 1996. The orchestra holds its open audition in the fall for new members; it meets for rehearsal on each Saturday from 1-4 PM, at MS 158 in Bayside, Queens, from October to June.
Our excellent faculty members are; Dr. Jeffrey Liang/Music Director, Chris Chi-Jen Chung/conductor & string; Dr. Johnny Kuo, stirng instructor; Chengwen Winnie Lai/woodwind; Lovell Chang/brass, Grace Chi-Ching Lin/percussion.
The orchestra presents 2 formal concerts annually. One free Holiday Concert for the community during holiday season in Queens; and one Annual Concert at Lincoln Center in spring. The orchestra also performs 2 concerts for community service at nursing homes. In some summers, this orchestra had organized concert tours to West Coast, Europe and Asia. The 7th Asia Tour will be from June 28-July 9, 2012, visiting Japan, Taiwan and China for concerts and sight-seeing tour.
Our mission is to provide the multicultural and orchestral experiences to talented and serious young music students age 10-18, with our unique repertories of Classical, Popular, Jazz, Film, Broadway and Asian Music. Many of our members are new immigrants, they are eager to learn the music in the US; as well as, some American-born 2nd and 3rd generation youngsters, who would like to know the music of their heritage. Our program is sponsored, in part by the Public Funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; other sponsors including: Cultural Center & Taipei Cultural Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York.

Bio of Conductor Chi-Jen Chung
Mr. Christopher Chung, a native of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, began his musical studies in piano, violin and cello between the ages of five and nine. Following high school, he continued his studies in cello at the National Taiwan Normal University where he received a Certificate of Music Education. Later in the United States, Mr. Chung studied under the tutelage of master cellist, Peter Wiley of the famed Guarneri Quartet at the prestigious Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, SUNY, where he had earned both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Music. As an active performer, Mr. Chung served as the Associate Principal Cellist of the Taipei Symphony Orchestra; Principal Cellist of the Yin-Qi Symphony Orchestra and Chorus; Principal Cellist in the Yin-Qi Chamber Orchestra; and Cellist with the Chinese Community Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Mr. Chung’s former teaching positions include Guang-Ren High School, Xi-Men Elementary School and Guan-Du Christian College in Taiwan. In 2003, at the Hwa-Sun Culture Center in Taipei, Taiwan Mr. Chung served as the Music Director and featured cellist for the world premiere of A Streetcar Named Desire (Chinese-language adaptation). The production was subsequently recorded for DVD. Mr. Chung is currently teaching cello and piano at Song of Songs Music School, Eastern School of Music, and privately in Long Island and Westcheter areas. Mr. Chung joined the faculty of Youth Orchestra, CYCNY in fall 2006; and is the conductor of the 2011-12 Season.
