The Lunar New Year at Flushing Town Hall

Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Workshops. Free to low cost events! To shine the spotlight on The Year of the Snake, Flushing Town Hall hosts a month long celebration of dance, music, interactive workshops and the visual arts,

LUNAR NEW YEAR PRESS CONFERENCE – Wed, Jan 30, 2013, 11:30am
Flushing Town Hall Executive Director Ellen Kodadek joins local officials, the Flushing Town Hall Board of Directors, and the greater Queens community to kick-off a month-long Lunar New Year Celebration. Ms. Susan Yu, Director of the Taipei Cultural Center, will introduce guests to the history of New Year Prints, a venerable form of Chinese folk art. On loan from the Taipei Cultural Center, the exhibition showcases winning works from the past three years of Taiwan’s New Year Prints Contest.

The Momenta Quartet’s concert at Flushing Town Hall will feature an afternoon of Debussy, a quartet by Jason Hwang, and a Tan Dun pipa concerto by special guest, acclaimed pipa virtuoso Min Xiao Fen.

This exhibition showcases winning works from the past three years of Taiwan’s New Year Prints Contest, as well as commissioned works.

Annual Favorite! A sampler of spectacular dance performances from China, Korea, Taiwan, and more… Presented by the NY Institute of Culture & the Arts, curated by Dr. Hsing Lih Chou.

CLASSICAL MUSIC: IN FOREIGN LANDS – FREDERIC CHIU
SAT, FEB 16, $12/$10 Members/$8 Children/$6 Member Children, 2:15 PM
Chiu performs the music of Chopin, Liszt and Prokofiev relating to travel and nostalgia for one’s homeland, followed by the works of Chinese composer Gao Ping and French composers Debussy and Ravel; integrated with Classic Chinese poetry from the Tang and Song dynasties, performed by Dr. Chou.

FAMILY WORKSHOP: LUNAR NEW YEAR PRINT MAKING
SUNDAYS, FEB 24 and MAR 3, 1 PM
$10/$8 Members and Children
This printmaking workshop allows hands-on experience, and to learn to appreciate the beauty of prints and to understand the culture of Chinese New Year Prints.

Learn how to make a beautiful paper lotus lantern!

LIVE FROM THE POEMOBILE: A LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION
SUN, MAR 3, 6:30 PM, FREE
Celebrate the Lunar New Year with Chinese poetry by Dr. Hsing-Lih Chou and the POEMobile (sponsored by Bowery Arts + Science and City Lore). Performances will be accompanied by projections of the poems in the original Chinese texts and English language translations onto Flushing Town Hall’s facade. Fun for the whole family!
