The Smithsonian’s Freer Sackler Galleries Presents 50th Anniversary Salute to Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards

The Smithsonian’s Freer?Sackler Galleries and the Taipei Economic and Culture Representative Office (TECRO) are proud to present the 50th Anniversary Salute to Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards film series from November 15–24, 2013.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, the most established film honors in Chinese-language cinema. Internationally well-known Chinese filmmakers, such as Ang Lee and John Woo, consider winning a Golden Horse Award a milestone of their careers.

To commemorate this historic occasion, the Freer | Sackler Galleries and TECRO have organized a showcase of four Golden Horse Award winning films: The Terrorizers (1986) directed by Edward Yang, Vive l’Amour (1994) directed by Tsai Ming-liang, No Puedo Vivir Sin Ti (2009) directed by Leon Dai, and GF*BF (2012) directed by Yang Ya-Che. The series highlight will most certainly be the return to the silver screen of The Terrorizer. This film has not been shown in theaters since its debut in 1986 and has never been released by DVD. The version featured during the Freer | Sackler showcase has been newly digitally restored and is a sumptuous feast for film fans take in.

The showcase series will screen free of charge at the Freer’s Meyer Auditorium from November 15–24. On opening night, a tea reception featuring a variety of High Mountain Oolong Tea from Taiwan will be open to the public on Friday, November 15, from 5:30-7 pm prior to the first screening of the series, The Terrorizers.
