A night of Taiwanese food, drinks and 4 live bands at the Fifth Annual “Hello Taiwan Rocks!” Concert will be rocking New York City on Nov 29th from 7-10pm at Taiwan Center in Flushing New York (137-44 Northern Blvd, Flushing, New York 11354). This year, we have also added the popular Taiwanese culture, Taiwan Night Market, to bring you some Taiwan’s most iconic snacks such as sausage oden, oyster thin noodles, bubble teas and so on to enjoy while the attendees watch the performance on the stage and to help celebrate Thanksgiving weekend.
Last few years, many local Taiwanese communities came together and held the annual Hello Taiwan Rocks! Concert and raised over $20,000 to support different non-profit organizations. This year, the organizers are donating and fundraising for Garden of Hope Foundation. Event proceeds will go the Garden of Hope Foundation, a non-profit organization established in Taiwan in 1988 with a vision to create a world free of sexual abuse, sexual exploitation and domestic violence and whose mission is to relieve and rehabilitate unfortunate children, youths, women and their families; and promote gender justice and advocate for social and educational reforms.
New York City has long been one of the leading centers of indie music movement. Within it, Taiwanese musicians are also in the scene making music and hoping one day in reaching to the top. Flushing is where many of the Taiwanese immigrants settle when they first arrive in New York, and Taiwan Center was established to be the community hub for all Taiwanese events. Though the concert is only in its third year, the organizers wish it to be an annual tradition to provide an opportunity for the indie bands to showcase their music and for the younger generation to unite, celebrate and network.
The 5th Hello Taiwan Rocks! Concert will feature Space Meow, Trabajo, Generator Ohm and the Chef Brian Tsao Band. Chef Brian Tsao will also be showcasing his signature dish, Beef Bulgogi Tacos at the concert! Chef Tsao is the only chef at the entire season who succeeded in beating iron chef Bobby Flay at the Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay” show.
Four live bands’ background:
Generator Ohm: a quartet for rock and roll. Big on guitars. Friend of the low end. And we never miss a beat. Got them all. Ernest D’amaso, and Willie Chen created Generator Ohm in 2010. We play with dirt and find creatures of life between our fingers. We jump the tires and see with closed eyes what is on top of that summit beside us. We forget to bring our cameras, and settle for focusing on the things we want to remember. We take the day on our backs, and unpack the burdens at night to seek the fruits of a bard’s labor. We do it the way we heard our heroes do it; with guitars, drums, and our voices. We have a new set of sounds to express, and a new set of tools to use, produced by electricity from within the human heart. Generator Ohm is first heart, then comes resistance.
Space Meow: an international art and music group created by experimental filmmaker Dooll Chao, with photographer Walter Wlodarczyk and actor / producer Adeline Thery. The band combines electronic loops, live instruments and visuals in a fusion of Asian, European and American styles to create songs that have been described as dark, yet danceable. Their work is inspired by punk rock, hip-hop, New York City, the relationship between Eastern and Western cultures, space, and cats.
Trabajo: an electronic duo from Ridgewood, Queens played a set of industrial-tinged dance music that featured gamelan samples, culled from Nonesuch albums, Indonesian tape blogs, and live performances from YouTube. Their energy was infectious as the room approached half-full, and they fused heavy bass beats with bell and gong sounds.”
The Chef Brian Tsao Band: Mira Sushi & Izakaya’s executive chef and the only challenger to win on Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay” season one, Chef Brian Tsao grew up with dreams of becoming a musician. Though musical ambitions were put aside for nearly 10 years as he pursued his other passion, the culinary arts, music had always been a part of Chef Brian Tsao’s life. The music brought to life by the Chef Brian Tsao Band is like his cooking… furious, hard rocking and loud! With influences from 80’s hair metal, classic rock & stoner rock, Chef Brian Tsao, together with drummer Joe Robinson and bassist Eric Chong, are going to FRY your senses… literally.
The 5th Hello Taiwan! Charity Concert is organized by AsianInNY.com, TAANY/Passport to Taiwan, and Tai-Ke New York and almost all major Taiwanese communities and groups have all volunteered to participate this meaningful fundraising event including North America Taiwanese Women’s Association of New York, Taiwanese American Association of Greater New York, Taiwanese American Council of Greater New York, Taiwanese American Professionals of New York, Formosan Association for Public Affairs Young Professionals Group, Federation of Taiwanese Student Associations in New York, NYC Taiwanese & Taiwanese Friends Network, Association of Taiwanese Alumni in Greater New York and Taiwan Center.
