Airports, airlines celebrate the Chinese New Year

EVA Air will celebrate the Lunar New Year on outbound flights from Taipei by serving traditional New Year’s dishes in all cabins on Feb. 18.

At least two North American airports are hosting special events to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which this year falls on Feb. 19 and is the Year of the Ram (or the Year of the Goat, depending on how you choose to interpret the “yang” symbol).

Today, Feb. 18, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is hosting four performances (from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) at the Asleep at the Wheel stage (across from Gate 10). The line-up includes two soloists, the 512 Band (a Chinese pop band) and the Guzheng Shao Instrumental Ensemble, which plays folk music with traditional Chinese instruments.

On Thursday, Feb. 19, Vancouver International Airport is hosting a mid-day celebration in the International Terminal (Departures – Level 3) that will include music, a lion dance throughout the terminal, calligraphy, contests and complimentary photos.

Taiwan-based EVA Air will celebrate the Lunar New Year on outbound flights from Taipei, including those to New York (JFK), LAX, Seattle and San Francisco, by serving traditional New Year’s dishes in all cabins on Feb. 18, the Lunar New Year’s Eve. To bring good fortune, Eva Air will also serve passengers Taiwan’s traditional pineapple cake on Feb. 19, the Lunar New Year day.

Even EVA Air’s fleet of six Hello Kitty-themed planes, are celebrating the Chinese New Year.

Year-round, the planes carry more than 100 different Hello Kitty branded service items, ranging from lavatory toiletries to meals. But to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Goat, headrest covers, placemats, and other inflight service items have received a makeover and now feature Hello Kitty wearing a set of goat horns. ‘)}
